In Butter Architecture, space, often understood as a mere support for something to happen, becomes the place of events. It was this research that was at the core of the master’s dissertation with a work of the same name, from which it was possible to rethink new approaches to place in site-specific practices.

Several butter tablets are combined, forming unlikely architectures. On these structures, dolls and objects for human use compose imaginary scenes. The characters, however, are static. The space becomes the protagonist and determines the scene: heated by the lighting, the tablets melt, fall apart, taking with them the elements arranged there.

The softening of places, in turn, does not only touch the “inside” of the scene. Softness and fluidity are also possible ways of composing the work. The places it establishes are not given a priori, but are constituted to make photographic images or videos. Each montage takes place according to different supports and rhythms: in photographs or videos broadcast in different media, composing installations, in photographic stills or on the screen of electronic devices.

In 2022, the work had its most recent montage, at the Various Smalls Fires gallery, in Los Angeles, USA. But perhaps fulfilling the vocation of the title itself, Butter Architecture has been (and still is) in many places. In addition to the latter, there were 3 other physical assemblies, all in São Paulo – in 2006, at Paço das Artes; in 2007 at Galeria Baró Cruz; and in 2021, at Galeria Jaqueline Martins. In its permanent virtual exhibition, it can be found on Youtube.

The title of the work initially appeared in English, Butter Architecture, but was translated into Portuguese in a non-literal way, Lugares Moles [Soft Places], from an expanded understanding of translation: in the passage from one language to another, new meanings are conquered, some are resign. There was an opening here for the non-watertight character of language. A certain “letting go” of the senses.

Each montage of the work, in turn, by composing itself in a different way and in conjunction with other works and other contexts, also activates a flexible polysemy. Butter Architecture can evoke, for example, the elaboration of a cosmic song and celebration of the infinitely slow speed for human time of the performativity of space; but it can also, as in the last montage in Los Angeles, sought to highlight, erect itself as a critical commentary on global warming.
