Con-fio’s context was the Remetente project, which established (or made explicit) a network of affinities and influences, where each of an initial group of six artists invited another, who in turn invited a third, setting up a final group of 18. Thus, the specific space, the starting point of this work, was the network of participants.

Each artist in the project received a pair of cast copper bricks in the mail where the syllables “con” and “fio” were read in high relief, offering an instance of material concreteness to the wires and nodes of the established network. In the collective exhibition, more bricks were produced to be distributed to the public, extending their participation in the network. Each new participant had his name written down in a list with the names of the previous ones; each updated list was printed in two copies and one was given to the visitor.

The participating public won only one brick and no longer the pair. Armed with one syllable and knowing the existence of the other, he completed the word virtually or by connecting it with another’s piece, taking the relational aspect of the work forward and expanding it. One sees how the object, when leaving the exhibition environment, continues to acquire couplings and possible uses at its deposition site.

This work was presented for the first time at Remetente projetct, later at Galeria Vermelho and at the Havana Biennial, when it integrated the work Felix.
